Members of Rotary Team Mexico are saddened by the news that Mamá Teresa passed away last month after a short battle with Covid. Teresa was a constant during our Live Different builds, and her fabulous meals were always a highlight of our trips - tortillas, chili rellenos, burritos - all were prepared with love and were muy delicioso!

Teresa was a loving, caring and giving human being, always greeting us with a smile and a hug when we walked into her kitchen.  She delighted in making extra special treats for us, and even gave cooking lessons in traditional Mexican delicacies.

The following is a tribute written by Rose Friesen, Live Different’s Interim Manager of Operations in Mexico:

“We first got to know Teresa through her delicious cooking for our Live Different Build volunteers in Mexico. She soon became known as Mamá Teresa. In part, because she made us each feel like part of the family. Her warm heart and her genuine care and concern for us made each person she met feel loved.

Even beyond her work in the Live Different kitchen, she was always serving others. She cooked breakfast on the weekends at a kids program in her community and cared for neighbourhood children while their parents worked and even took in some who needed a home.

She was always willing to lend a helping hand or a hug or to make do with a little less so that others wouldn't go without. She was our Mexican Mother Teresa. She was our Mom. Her special ingredient was love... in her cooking and in her life.

Our lives were richer because of her presence. Mamá Teresa, you will be dearly missed. Live Different embraces her family as they mourn the loss of their mother and grandmother. Thank you, Ana, Elias, Pepe and Magda for sharing your mom with the rest of us."

Mamá Teresa led a life of dedication to her people and her community, and she will be missed.
