The October 9th meeting of the Rotary Club of Parksville AM was opened by President Bruce at 07:01.5 hrs. As this was the official visit of the District Governor the membership produced a very respectful rendering of both The Star Spangled Banner and O Canada as led by Ray Walker. Followed by the invocation by our very soon to be new member, Major Norman Hamelin.

The invitation to breakfast was issued by President Bruce to the 18 members present, the procession to be led by our 4 visitors this morning who were District Governor Peter Taylor, his wife Kristine, Assistant Governor Ed Fougner and Grace Dyck the granddaughter of Ron and Helen Dyck.

After breakfast a very enthusiastic rendering of The 4 Way Test was led by Peter Hann.

A brief introduction of AG Ed Fougner by President Bruce, Ed then introduced DG Peter Taylor and his wife Kristine. DG Peter was then immediately put to work to perform a new member induction for our two newest members, Vic Andrushko and Norman Hamelin. Congratulations and a very hardy welcome to Parksville AM Vic and Norman.

Two Minutes of Rotary, (always seems to take more than 2 minutes, and this morning was no exception!), was delivered by Ray Walker and in keeping with Vocational Service Month was a review of the Rotary Code of Conduct. A full review can be found at

Our guest speaker this morning, DG Pete Taylor of the Rotary Club of Tacoma, was introduced by AG Ed Fougner who highlighted some of Peter’s accomplishments in the communications industry, broadcasting and his own PR and advertising firm.

Pete began his presentation outlining the recognition that Rotary International bestows on outstanding Rotarians. He then recognized two of our own members. First John O’Brien who has obtained the level of Major Donner of the Foundation of Rotary International. Peter presented John with the blue Paul Harris pin marking the level obtained and an engraved crystal plaque from the Foundation. Way to go John! The second recognition by Peter was for the “Energizer Award” being awarded to one outstanding member of each of the clubs visited by the DG in 2013 who shows extraordinary enthusiasm for the work of Rotary. The Parksville AM member selected, Cara MacDonald, in absentia. Congratulations Cara!

Pete enlightened us as to why he as DG wore ties to these meetings. It appears that he has numerous ties left over from his business days and this way he can use them up as they gather remembrances of the 88 Rotary meals he partakes off. (Scrambled eggs from Parksville AM!).

When he threw out the question, “What is your memorable Rotary moment?” Peter Hann in his most eloquent manner replied with his thoughts of the friendship and networking of Rotary.

DG Peter went on to remind us of all the items in the Rotary Planning Guide; membership, Foundation and public information. Also encouraged us to get involved with Rotarians around the world through; Fellowships, Rotary Action Groups, Friendship Exchanged, Rotary Scholarships, Youth Exchange and the RI Convention.

Pete ended with an invitation to join him along with District 5050 at the District Conference in Whistler in May 2014 and thanking us for all our good work.

Peter was thanked by President Bruce and was given a certificate indicating that our club would have three children immunized against Polio in his name.

Gordon Elliott presented Present Bruce with a cheque in the amount of $2,975 as Parksville AM’s share in the 2013 Sand Castle volunteer program.

The 50/50 was won by Eric Walper who took home the grand sum of $16.00.

The Sargent was up to his usual tricks; finding Kay Burgoyne’s “mother’s?” picture in the paper, hitting Don L for using the word “perfect” in describing himself, etc. Lots of “happy dollars” for the DG’s talk and visit. Anniversaries this week; Helen & Ron Dyck, Marianne & John O’Brien.

The meeting terminated at 8:10 hrs. with a post meeting between the Executive and the DG.
